Qualifications and Training
After graduating from Curtin University as a pharmacist, Mr Tan changed his career path, gaining entry into post-graduate medicine at Flinders University in South Australia.
Following graduation, Mr Tan returned to Perth for an internship at Fremantle Hospital and started general surgical training, rotating through all the major teaching hospitals in Perth.
On completion of subspecialty training in general surgery, Mr Tan took another three years of post fellowship training in upper gastrointestinal surgery. His first year was at Fremantle Hospital before training with the Australian and New Zealand Gastro Oesophageal Surgery Association program for two years. During this time, Mr Tan worked with the the only bariatric centre of excellence in Australia - St George Hospital – Sydney and The Austin Hospital in Melbourne.

Qualifications and Training
Jonathan is a specialist upper gastrointestinal, bariatric and general surgeon based at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and at Hollywood Private HospitaI. He provides dedicated care for pathologies such as reflux, hiatal hernia, gallbladder disease and abdominal wall hernias. He has a particular interest in gastro-oesopahgeal cancer and bariatric surgery.
In 2004 he completed his medical degree in New Zealand 4 and undertook a PhD in bariatric surgery and gut peptide physiology for which he was the recipient of the prestigious Clinical Research Training Fellowship from the Health Research Council of New Zealand. His thesis was awarded the University of Otago Basic Science PhD prize and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Sir Louis Barnett research prize.
He continued formal post-fellowship training in Upper GI/Bariatric surgery with the College of Surgeons ANZGOSA program. He undertook three years of high-volume advanced/laparoscopic oesophagogastric and bariatric fellowships at Sir Charles Gairdner, then with Mr Ahmad Aly at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne and finally as a senior fellow with Professor Michael Griffin at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in the United Kingdom in one of the highest volume oesophago-gastric units in the world.
